Ferries are a very important form of transportation in Europe. At some point or another during a backpacking Europe trip, a ferry connection from one country to another will likely be unavoidable.
Don't worry - ferry travel is probably the most comfortable, scenic, and interesting way to get around Europe...and it is usually affordable.
There is no such thing as a ferry pass, so all ferry tickets must be purchased on an individual basis, either for a round trip or, more typically on a extended trip around Europe, for a one-way journey.

There are literally dozens of ferry companies operating all over Europe. Most operators focus on one particular region or sea. OSiE is pleased to present this fairly comprehensive summary of ferry connections in Europe.
The list below is organized by country. Find the particular port in the country you are entering or leaving from, and then you will find the companies and routes that are available from that port. Be sure to book ahead a day or two, especially during summertime and on overnight routes.
Due to many questions, here is some important information. There are NO direct ferries from Croatia to/from Greece. This most certainly includes Dubrovnik to/from Patras, which seems to be a likely route from looking at a map. You will have to use Italy (Bari is best) as an intermediate point between Croatia and Greece, unless you want to travel overland by bus through Macedonia or Albania.
